Day 1: CUSCO (3,300 meters above sea level) – PILCOPATA (600 meters above sea level)
We will leave from Cusco in the morning in our private vehicle. We will travel through stunning valleys
and picturesque Andean communities that are nestled between the staggering peaks of the Andes
mountains in order to understand the cultural history of the Incas. We will stop at a pre-Incan site that
contains a number of tombs constructed by the Lupaca culture and later we will visit Paucartambo, a
beautiful colonial village. Next, we eat lunch on the road in the cloud forest, a lush tropical forest that is
characterized by frequent low level cloud cover. After lunch, we will continue our descent into the cloud
forest and perhaps have the chance to see some of the native species like the spectacled bear or the
cock of the rock, the national bird of Peru, who engages in a very unique and magical mating ritual. We
will also be able to see orchids, bromeliads, ferns, and more. We will continue observing the spectacular
natural beauty for the duration of our trek until we reach our lodge, the Pilcopata Inn, where we will
spend the first night.
Day 2: Pilcopata Lodge- Encounter with the shaman -
We will eat breakfast very early and then take a walk in our botanical garden in which we will be able to
observe jungle fauna like monkeys and various birds. Next, we will visit a coca plantation and a wildlife
rescue center. After that, we will travel to Atalaya, situated on the banks of the Alto Madre de Dios
River, 500 meters above sea level. There, the master shaman with whom we will have a session awaits
us. He will give his advice for taking the medicine and offer commentary about his experiences with the
medicine. Next, we will take a hike to visit different places where we can relax like Machuwasi lake,
where we will explore in balsa rafts to see birds like the prehistoric hoatzin, and with luck other animals
like monkeys and capybaras. Then, we will take a night walk through the jungle to look for insects and
amphibians. After the walk, we will eat dinner. Optional free activity: Zip Line. Those who participate in
the zip line will have the chance to appreciate an immaculate view of the jungle while they glide
overhead.
Day 3 Amazon Manu Lodge - Preparation for the ayahuasca ceremony
Very early in the morning, we will board our boat and head toward the Macaw Clay Lick- a wall of clay
that rests on the shore of the river where different species of parrots, like the blue headed parrot and
the the chestnut fronted macaw among others, who visit the clay lick every morning. Here, they eat the
mineral rich clay. After, we will return to our lodge for a delicious vegetarian breakfast. Next, we will
take a two hour hike through the jungle with our shaman so that he may educate us about the native
plants. We will then return to our cabana to bathe in the natural pool and to prepare our bodies for the
medicine.
Day 4: Amazon Manu Lodge - Aguas Calientes - Cusco
After a delicious breakfast, we can enjoy observing the hummingbirds that surround the cabana and
then we will board our boat to return to Atalaya where our bus will be waiting to take us to Cusco. We
will eat lunch en route to Cusco and arrive there between 5:30 and 6:30.
